A Kingdom of Priests (2024)

A Kingdom of Priests (1)

In the ancient wilderness, a remarkable story unfolded—one that continues to resonate with spiritual seekers today. The Israelites, freshly liberated from Egyptian bondage, found themselves at the foot of Mount Sinai, poised to receive divine instructions that would shape their identity as a nation and their relationship with God.

At the heart of these instructions was the tabernacle—a portable sanctuary where the infinite God would dwell among His finite people. But this wasn't just about constructing a building; it was about crafting a system that would allow sinful humans to approach a holy God safely.

The meticulous details God provided for the tabernacle's construction and operation reveal profound truths about His nature and our relationship with Him. Every element, from the priestly garments to the sacred furniture, carried deep symbolism and purpose.

Consider the high priest's attire. Adorned with gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarns, it was a visual masterpiece. But beyond its aesthetic appeal, it served as a powerful reminder of the priest's sacred duty. On his shoulders and over his heart, he carried stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. This symbolized the weighty responsibility of representing the people before God and the compassion with which he was to carry out his duties.

The tabernacle itself was a multi-layered structure, with each area increasing in holiness as one moved inward. At its core was the Most Holy Place, where the Ark of the Covenant resided—the earthly throne of God. Only the high priest could enter this sacred space, and only once a year, underscoring the vast chasm between human sinfulness and divine holiness.

Yet, God provided a way to bridge this gap. The elaborate system of sacrifices and offerings served as a constant reminder of the seriousness of sin and the cost of forgiveness. Every morning and evening, a lamb was sacrificed, its innocent life given to atone for the people's transgressions. This daily ritual painted a vivid picture of the wages of sin and foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice that would one day be made.

Intriguingly, among the tabernacle furnishings was the altar of incense, positioned just outside the Most Holy Place. This altar, where fragrant incense was burned daily, represented the prayers of God's people ascending to heaven. Its proximity to God's presence serves as a powerful reminder that we are closest to God when we commune with Him in prayer.

The emphasis on cleanliness and consecration throughout the tabernacle rituals underscores the importance of approaching God with reverence and purity. The priests had to wash in the bronze basin before entering the holy place, lest they die. This stark warning highlights that we cannot approach God on our own terms; He sets the standards for how we can draw near to Him.

Yet, amidst all the solemn rituals and dire warnings, we see God's heart of love shining through. He desired to dwell among His people, to be in relationship with them. The tabernacle was not just a place of sacrifice, but a place of meeting—where heaven touched earth.

Fast forward to today, and we see how these ancient rituals and symbols find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate High Priest, who carries our names on His heart before the Father. He is the perfect sacrifice, offered once for all time, eliminating the need for daily animal sacrifices. Through Him, we have direct access to God's presence, no longer limited by physical barriers or human mediators.

Moreover, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers means that we ourselves have become living tabernacles—temples of the living God. This profound truth carries with it both privilege and responsibility. We are called to live lives of holiness, set apart for God's purposes, just as the tabernacle items were consecrated for sacred use.

The story of the tabernacle also teaches us valuable lessons about work and rest. God provided detailed instructions and skilled workers filled with His Spirit to accomplish the task. Yet, He also commanded a weekly Sabbath rest, reminding us that our ultimate dependence is on Him, not our own efforts.

As we reflect on these ancient practices, we're invited to examine our own approach to God. Do we come before Him with reverence and awe, recognizing His holiness? Do we fully appreciate the cost of our forgiveness, made possible through Christ's sacrifice? Are we utilizing the privilege of prayer, drawing near to God with confidence?

Furthermore, as a "kingdom of priests," are we carrying the names of others—family, friends, coworkers—before God in prayer and intercession? Are we shouldering the responsibility of representing Christ to a watching world?

The tabernacle narrative challenges us to live intentionally, recognizing that every aspect of our lives can be an act of worship. It reminds us that God desires relationship with us, but on His terms. It calls us to lives of holiness, set apart for His purposes.

In a world that often trivializes sin and casual approaches to spirituality, the tabernacle stands as a powerful reminder of God's holiness and the incredible privilege we have in approaching Him. Through Christ, we now have unlimited access to God's presence—a reality that should fill us with awe, gratitude, and a desire to live lives worthy of this calling.

May we, like the ancient Israelites, build our lives around the presence of God, allowing His holiness to permeate every aspect of our existence. And may we never lose sight of the incredible gift we have in Christ, who has made a way for us to dwell in God's presence for eternity.
